Default Motiv RC

Now that more and more folks are receiving and using their Motiv gear, it seems like the time is right for a thread! Paul is crazy busy right now and has said he won't be able to stop in here on RCTech too frequently, but I think there are quite a few folks using his motors and/or batteries who should also be able to help answer questions or provide tips. Everything I have tried so far seems to indicate that these motors and batteries are really good and are a great option in the typically Trinity-dominated marketplace.

The Motiv website is here: http://motivrc.com/

I have been using a 13.5T in 1/12 since early-June and it seems really impressive. Seems very fast with very little fade (one tenth over eight minutes on the 60'x40' track I have been practicing on.) I have also been using a 4.5T and a 3.5T for mod sedan and mod 1/12, respectively, and those motors seem super smooth and driveable, but still very fast!

I think one of the best qualities of the Motiv motors, especially for 1/12, is that they are really light. My 13.5T comes in at 156g, which is anywhere from 10g to 15g lighter than most of the competition. The rotors and stators also seem to measure really well, although you want to consistently use the same equipment for this to make any sense of numbers across brands. The build quality of the motors is also really good, especially the rotors, and I think the spec sheet that is included with every motor is a nice touch.

Is there anybody else out there using these motors who has good starting points for gearing and timing, whether for 1s or 2s?

The batteries also seem really good with very little fade, although I have only had the chance to briefly test a 1s.

Here is the blurb from RedRC for the motors:

Motiv RC have introduced the M-Code Pro Tuned brushless motors for 1/10th and 1/12th applications. The motors offer a short stack design, specially selected stator material for low power loss and they use high-quality pure copper wire for the windings. Other features include gold-plated solder tabs, a sintered rotor, high-quality neodymium magnet material and all-aluminium, high airflow cans for lower operating temperatures. Every M-Code motor is hand checked, assembled, and packaged by a professional in house at the WI, USA office and included with each motor is an analysis and quality control spec sheet. This Sheet is filled out on a motor to motor basis all threw testing and assembly and includes information unique to your M-Code motor. Available is a range of windings including 3.5T to 8.5T modified and 10.5T to 21.5T stock variants.

Are they ROAR approved? Or pending approval? Just curious!

The ones we have seen at the track have seemed to be competitive. They have run with all the current top contenders. As we come through silly season I expect we will see them hanging around the top.

My timing is set at 40 degrees. Honestly, though, Paul set the timing when he sent the motor to me and I haven't touched it since. Every motor will have a timing value set when it ships, with the value determined by the testing done before shipping. You can obviously adjust timing if you would like, but the value that the motor ships with should be a pretty good starting point.

The Motiv 10.5T will be submitted to BRCA and EFRA, but ROAR submittal is still under discussion. Do you know of any racing series that use the ROAR list but disallow motors from the BRCA or EFRA lists?

The Western Canadian Indoor Championship Series goes by the ROAR motor approval list. However, last year an exception was made to allow motors that were on the BRCA list as well. To the best of my knowledge, this was a temporary exception. I will check into this further.

We run 10.5 non-boosted WGT in this series.

I haven't had enough time to get the timing and rollout right on my 12th scale yet but I just cycled the motive/defy 1s packs and they are very strong... Great IR and run time

I will be running a 21.5 in my f1 car and 17.5 in Stock tc this Saturday. I'm looking forward to trying them out. And the weight reduction is huge over r1 motors

17.5 motors available at www.gripworksrc.com

I just got conformation that motors that are on the BRCA OR ROAR list will be legal to use in the WCICS series moving forward.

Please let us know when the 10.5 is approved.

I bought one of these motors and it looks great, and feels super strong. I won't get to run it until I get to the on-road nats, so hoping it will do well.

Can anyone give numbers that I might expect to see for stator resistance and rotor strength? I'm interested in 17.5 and 13.5.

Can anybody comment on the performance of the 13.5 compared to the likes of D4, R1, Team powers, etc?
